Perseverance: Leadership in Turbulent Times

October 19 – 20, 2011
Hollyhock, Cortes Island, BC

Continuing from the evening presentation, we deepen our inquiry into the nature of perseverance.

Perseverance is the capacity to keep going even long after the passion for our work has dissipated. It is a continuous and conscious choice to not give up, no matter the circumstances. The Chinese character for perseverance is a knife over a human heart. This intensive program will be focused on the following themes: The effect of these times on our ability to persevere; Staying in the middle of the river; The role of mindfulness; Dealing with opposition urgency and change; and Turning to one another. Together we will explore the following questions, so that we might develop capacity for working with these conditions and dynamics, practicing discernment and developing effective leadership

All’s Well That Ends Well

Over the past 15 years the Endswell Foundation made over 700 grants totalling over $20 million dollars.  From our 1992 inception was the intention to spend down our entire grant making resources over a ten year period.

Karen’s Story

Environmental activism in the 90s was alive with BC forestry issues—and with activists competing for scarce funding and media attention. At Greenpeace Canada, Karen Mahon was passionately leading landmark campaigns but on the verge of burnout. Invitations started arriving from a group called Hollyhock, offering Greenpeace and other environmentalists a chance for rest and renewal. “I remember being shocked by the invite. We were trying to save BC forests—who had time to retreat?” says Karen.

The 220 Years

We are settling into the extraordinary Tides Renewal Centre two blocks down the street from the old digs at 220.  And before the newness of it all wears off, before we are all once caught up again in the unrelenting pace of business as "unusual", I think its time for a moment of retrospection on the phenomenal years at 220 Cambie Street.
