Louise Schwarz, co-founder, The Recycling Alternative

In 1989, galvanized by garbage, Louise Schwarz founded The Recycling Alternative, which today operates a fleet of 16 trucks and employs 30+ staff.

Ever in search of sustainable alternatives, Recycling Alternative began running its fleet on recycled biodiesel in 2003 and continues to operate Vancouver’s only 100% self serve, cardlock biodiesel pump for the Vancouver Biodiesel Co-op’s 200+ members.

In 2009 Louise and her business partner, Robert Weatherbe introduced organics collection and began developing innovative programs in zero waste with their prototype truck.

Currently Recycling Alternative is partnering with Farmers Market to offer the Food Scraps Drop Spot, a collection model for apartment and condo residents.

Louise sits on the Boards of the Cultch, Our Social Fabric and BC Biodiesel Association and on the Advisory Boards of Street Youth Job Action and Downtown Community Court. She holds degrees in Political Science and Spanish Literature, as well as a Teaching Degree from University of Glasgow.

A native Vancouverite, Louise has lived in Mexico, Italy, Spain, London, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
