Who we are is a complex mix of personality, life experience, and the social, political and cultural context within which we form our identity. Building Conscious Use of Power addresses our social identity as a source of wealth and talent, but also as a place of deep wounding due to marginality, abuse of power, institutional oppression, and the stultifying and limiting effects of privilege.
How we are in the world, how we relate, collaborate, lead and be effective in the world is a function of our experiences with power. And much of our experience is unconscious.
- Are you clear about the mix of influences that form your reactions to power?
- Do you take opportunities to compassionately engage and understand others who hold power and influence on the issues you care about?
- Have you engaged in frustrating debates about whose pain is larger or who is most to blame for the inequities of our society?
- Are you locked into predictable reactions to power and would you like to develop more fluidity in how you respond to power and its use?
Our Building Conscious Use of Power module will help you explore your social and cultural origins, your experience of power, and how to use power to the benefit of your work, personal life, and social activism.
You will learn to identify your innate power, power that comes from your deepest source, which you can use to unite, collaborate and transform yourself, your relationships, your organization and the world around us.
This module is a shared dialogue on how power impacts you and your work as a social change agent. You will explore healthy uses of power in relationships and groups. You will have reflection time to engage other change agents as together you forge greater practical understanding of transformational power. What does this look like and how can it be harnessed for social change?
