Mindfulness and Wise Action: An ALIA West Workshop
ALIA is coming to San Francisco, Seattle, and Vancouver this fall. We hope you can join us for a one-day immersion in the skills and practice of “wise action.”
What do we mean by wise action? As leaders, change agents, and innovators, our actions are often driven by external pressures and the internal momentum of what we’ve done before. We think we understand the problem, and we move quickly to gather resources, take action, and achieve results. In the past, this style of leadership was often effective and rewarded. In situations that are ever-changing and complex, a new kind of leadership is called for—one that responds to the non-linear demands of our time.
“Wise action” is about stepping back in order to step forward with greater clarity and accuracy. We make it a practice to engage situations with curiosity and mindfulness, and with our intuitive sense of knowing “switched on.” We test assumptions, pay attention to timing, and then act decisively when the moment is right.
In this one-day workshop we will take mindfulness into leadership and action through big-brush calligraphy, dialogue, and application to your current project. Through hands-on exercises you will
- Learn and apply a five-step model of wise action.
- Experiment with a simple mindfulness practice that you can continue at home and bring “into action” in your workplace.
- Fine-tune your sense of timing.
- Deepen your leadership presence and capacity.
- Bring greater precision, focus, power, and impact into your actions.
- Strengthen your ability to work effectively in environments of high stress and high complexity.
