Assistant Controller, TCI – Vancouver Permanent, Full-Time

Tides Canada is seeking an Assistant Controller for our Vancouver office. The Assistant Controller, TCI will assist the Controller in ensuring TCI’s finance goals are met in an efficient and effective manner while assisting in the implementation of new systems and processes that will allow us to achieve greater levels of service to our clients. The successful candidate will be responsible for the leadership and supervision of the TCI finance team, including responsibility for financial services and TCI Project reporting.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Direct the month end process including ensuring timely and accurate reporting to TCI Projects, as well as a periodic review of Project cash flow, budget variances, financia planning, program allocations, overhead and deferred overhead and TCI cost allocation
  • Supervise and direct the activities of two Finance Leads to ensure a high level of service to TCI projects.
  • Provide services in the capacity of a Finance Lead to a small portfolio of large, complex Projects
  • Manage the year end Project budget process, including a hands-on approach for complex and/or high need Projects
  • Provide ongoing technical and advisory assistance to finance staff
  • Design and build reports for the Finance department, in cooperation with IT
  • Respond to queries from internal and external stakeholders and produce or direct the production of financial analysis reports
  • Review, as necessary, various accounting documents to ensure accuracy of information and make or direct correcting entries as necessary
  • Prepare annual audit working papers and liaise with external auditors
  • Provide accounting technical support on finance issues to staff, Project staff, funders, management and other internal and external stakeholders

Job Requirements

  • Enrollment in, and actively pursuing, an accounting designation equivalent to CGA PACE level or above
  • An Undergraduate degree in accounting or business would be beneficial
  • 5 years accounting experience, preferably in a non-profit environment, including 2 years experience supervising staff and/or managing programs, projects or processes
  • Strong understanding of accounting concepts and processes, together with excellent mathemactical and analytical abilities
  • Previous experience preparing and completing regulatory reports and year end working papers is preferred
  • Exceptional customer service orientation
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills with an ability to effectively communicate accounting data, reports and processes to those with no financial background
  • Demonstrated accountability, flexibility and initiative
  • Pro-active in nature and enjoy finding and suggesting improvements to systems and processes
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics NAV or other CRM or donor database an asset
  • Strong computer skills with advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Alignment with the goals and values of Tides Canada
