Sierra Club BC is looking for a master strategist to join our team as Director of Communications. If you combine strategic acumen with an in-depth understanding of environmental issues and key stakeholders, and how they play out in the context of B.C. politics; if the media landscape is your natural habitat; if you are passionate about environmental education, and enjoy batting the creative ball with a team of like-minded enthusiasts, we would like to hear from you.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Creating an integrated communications strategy, in close collaboration with campaigns and development directors. The strategy would be based on Sierra Club BC’s strategic planning framework and would cover all audiences and platforms, including website, online engagement, mass and social media, newsletters and targeted stakeholder communications.
- Participating in and helping frame strategic planning for the organization
- Being part of Sierra Club BC’s Management Team, with responsibility for operational decision making (budgets, planning, staffing etc.)
- Developing strong media strategies and generating compelling frames that become a strong narrative in the mainstream media, in service of campaign and program goals.
- Leading the communications team in developing targeted, audience-specific messaging for each campaign/program as part of the campaign/program strategy.
- Identifying and leveraging strategic opportunities for media and public profile; pitching stories to media.
- Deploying the communications team capacity to ensure rapid media response on key issues.
- Alongside the Executive Director and the Director of Campaigns, being a key spokesperson for the organisation on a range of issues.
- In close collaboration with the Development Director, developing the theme and high-level messaging for fundraising appeals.]
- Participating in developing grant proposals for major campaigns/programs.
- Government relations, as needed.
- Supervising the communications team.
- Producing/editing written content, as needed.
Qualifications:
- BA or Master’s degree in a relevant field.
- 5 years’ experience working in a media outlet or communications department of a non-profit organisation; experience as senior position in communications an asset.
- Passion for conservation, environmental justice and environmental education.
- In-depth understanding of environmental issues in B.C.
- Proven experience in writing and editing for news and feature media.
- Understanding of current digital media and strategy, including social media.
- Excellent understanding of brand building and brand management, as well as strategic marketing and strategies
- Strong consultative, change management, project management and organizational skills and experience
- Creativity in writing, project approach, and problem solving.
- Ability to think and act strategically.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced team environment
- Strong interpersonal skills and collaborative approach.
- Computer proficiency in basic computer applications including spreadsheet, word processing and database software, contact management systems and content management programs.
The position is five days a week. Reduced hours (four days/week) option may be available. Salary will conform to Sierra Club BC’s salary grid, depending on qualifications. Salary for this position, on a full-time basis, starts at $57,000 annually.
