ABOUT US
The Nature Conservancy is the world’s leading conservation organization, working in all 50 states and more than 33 countries. Founded in 1951, the mission of The Nature Conservancy is to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Director of Corporate Practices is responsible for furthering the development of TNC’s corporate engagement strategy, leading and coordinating strategic corporate relationships across programs, and working with the Risk Assessment Committee, and the Risk Officer to manage corporate risk. This position reports to the Chief Conservation Operating Officer. Specifically, this corporate practices lead will, in collaboration with others:
Set overall corporate engagement strategy for TNC:
Identify key sectors and corporations where TNC will pursue engagements through philanthropy, cause-related marketing, or corporate sustainability (i.e., development by design, climate change and carbon offsets, renewable energy impacts, supply chain practices)
Determine TNC’s role to “transform markets” through certification, such as Forest Stewardship Council.
Manage and evaluate the role and functioning of the International Leadership Council
Provide input into key risk and conflict policies such as how and when TNC can accept corporate funding, and policies for working with competitors.
Serve as point person and lead coordinator for developing and managing corporate relationships across Conservation, Marketing, Philanthropy, External Affairs and field programs:
The Director will not be the relationship manager for all corporate engagements at TNC, but rather play a coordinating and support function for these relationships.
New opportunities identified by the CEO or other sources that require a lead TNC contact person will be directed to this individual, who will:
Meet with the corporation in person or by phone to understand their interests
Connect the corporation to the appropriate relationship lead – philanthropy, marketing, conservation or field manager Provide guidance and, if necessary, support to the TNC relationship manager
In cases where the corporate engagement may involve significant engagement of multiple managers across TNC, the Director will play a more proactive role in developing the strategy for that relationship and in some cases may serve as lead manager for that relationship
For existing relationships or new relationships initiated by other programs, the Director will be aware of these engagements and become involved on an as-needed basis.
The Director will also track all major TNC corporate relationships in a central database and facilitate communications and coordination across Conservation, Marketing, Philanthropy, External Affairs and field.
Provide input into and implement guidance, standards, training and a risk management approach for corporate partnerships:
The Director will work with the Conservancy’s Risk Officer and others to refine a set of corporate engagement principles and guidelines, and to communicate these across the organization.
The Director will also develop a management approach to ensure that senior managers are aware of and follow TNC’s corporate strategy and principles. This approach will include working with the Risk Assessment Committee and conservation leadership to ensure appropriate guidance, tracking, training, and management of risks across Conservancy programs. This will also include model MOUs and agreement language for engaging with corporations.
Lead the management of the International Leadership Council
The Director will manage and communicate with the ILC, including a reevaluation of the role of this group within the overall corporate engagement strategy.
Develop a sustainable fundraising model for growing our corporate practices work
The Director will review corporate funding models at other organizations and develop a model for funding a larger Conservancy corporate engagement capacity, consistent with the organization’s corporate principles. The corporate engagement strategy and funding model will be compiled into a business plan for the Conservancy’s corporate engagement team.
Connect, as appropriate, with corporate programs at other NGOs, industry associations, and other external organizations
