Job Description
Reporting to Senior Vice President, Tides and part of the Tides Program and Services group, the Director of Donor and Grantmaking Services cultivates a strong team of philanthropic and grantmaking professionals to deliver exceptional service to clients, supervises and coaches four dedicated client service teams of philanthropic advisors (one of which is New York based) and develops and implements efficient and effective grant making service delivery, grants administration, and strategic partnerships. The Director also assures that technology and information systems integrally support the donor services and grantmaking work of Tides.  S/he coordinates with Finance staff in areas of operations and policy overlap and on certain key client service issues and projects.

The Director of Donor and Grantmaking Services is accountable for the quality of client service experience with Tides.  S/he is the primary champion for client satisfaction and retention, requiring partnership and collaboration across Tides to ensure that all clients receive excellent services.  S/he also leads the movement to continuously improve services and programs, ensuring that Tides is achieving its mission of supporting and strengthening progressive social change through creative philanthropy.

The Director of Donor and Grantmaking Services supports staff to implement strategic goals and objectives and coordinates evaluation procedures.  S/he also collaborates with the Communications & Marketing team to monitor trends in the sector, define markets and outreach strategies, and ensure that the client experience is reflected in communications materials.  As a member of the Tides Program Management Team, under the Senior Vice Presidents, s/he plays a central role in Tides leadership and works closely with the Director of Fiscal Sponsorship to collaborate on joint efforts that support the programmatic services and impact of Tides fiscal sponsorship and philanthropic strategies.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead the Design and Delivery of Client Services to Individual and Institutional Donors:
  • Coordinate exceptional service delivery to Tides’ donor clients and work in close collaboration with the Director of Fiscal Sponsorship to ensure smooth service delivery across programs
  • In coordination with Vice President of  Marketing, recommend, review and approve all donor engagement and development activities
  • Respond to all escalation issues regarding donor service and serve as an ombudsperson for clients in the resolution of high-level conflicts and concerns
  • Participate in orientation, intake and distribution of new clients
  • Ensure client satisfaction and retention through consistent, high quality services to donors and partners
  • Develop innovative and effective services that reflect an understanding of client needs and the philanthropic sector
  • Participate in the development, planning and implementation of systems to improve Tides’ ability to fulfill its mission and to optimize exceptional client services
  • Lead development and implementation of policies and procedures for grantmaking and donor services
  • Supervise grants process and oversight – identify and recommend service and process improvements
  • Programmatic Synergies- Assess and develop program theme across teams and work with Philanthropic Advisors on formulation of programmatic strategies and client services
  • Engage in some business development (not more than 20% time)
  • Develop strategic alliances and partnerships with organizations, individuals, networks, and vendors as client needs and Foundation growth require
  • Represent the Foundation publicly by participating in site visits, conferences, and other gatherings
Manage and Lead Effective Teams:
  • Supervise Senior Philanthropic Advisors and Grants Manager, and coordinate cross-team strategy work
  • Manage distribution of new and ongoing client assignments to maximize efficient and effective service delivery
  • In collaboration with Finance department, set benchmarks for revenue and growth, manage existing revenue related to client fees, and participate in annual and long-term planning activities, as well as the implementation of these plans
  • Build knowledge management and data sharing capacity, to measure progress and impact, and support a learning culture across Tides
  • Coach and proactively support the professional and career development of staff with a range of experience levels, including partnering with Human Resources on recruitment, retention, and staff development.
Process Improvement and Quality Control
  • Serve as liaison for the provision of Administration and Information Technology services to Tides organizations
  • Develop and implement strategic goals and objectives, maintain quality assurance, and coordinate evaluation procedures
  • Review and approve all dockets
  • Define indicators of success and methods of measuring progress, including regular reporting to senior management team and Board
  • Manage shared programmatic endeavors at the network level, including partnerships that engage both donors and projects
  • Define indicators of success and methods of measuring and monitoring programs and services progress; including regular reporting to senior management team and Board.
Other duties assigned.   Some travel required.

Professional Qualifications:

Proven track record in the following:
  • Collaborative leadership, including management of multiple complex relationships
  • Working with individual and institutional donors
  • Excellent staff management and development experience, particularly in the leadership and development of teams for service delivery and innovation
  • The ability to think and act strategically, negotiate effectively and respectfully, and make thoughtful and clear decisions
  • Sound mathematical/quantitative, analytical, problem-solving  and reasoning skills
  • Ability to develop and apply knowledge management framework to projects and systems development
  • Ability to translate creative ideas into action in ways that balance progressive vision and values, donor input, organizational infrastructure and operations, and financial strategy
  • Taking individual leadership as well as building effective and collaborative teams
  • Commitment to progressive social change and ability to engage in strategic and analytical thinking  on issues of social change
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills: ability to communicate effectively via phone and email, draft clear and concise memos and other documents, communicate effectively with diverse constituents, and speak comfortably and effectively in public settings
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and empower staff to excel, while managing complex relationships
  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building skills; high ESI (emotional-social intelligence)
  • Ability to manage initiatives and budgets efficiently
  • Sensitivity to and the ability to integrate diverse viewpoints, different communication styles; ability to build strong relationships with a wide range of diverse colleagues
  • Ability to lead with flexibility while dealing with the challenges of a changing and ambiguous environment and diverse client requirements

Education and Experience:
  • An undergraduate degree required
  • 5+ years experience in philanthropy
  • 10+ years of nonprofit management, program, and supervisory experience in an operation of $5M+
  • Advanced degree or equivalent training in management preferred
  • Public charity environment/community foundation experience preferred.
