The BC office of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives –– one of the country’s leading progressive research institutes –– seeks a Project Manager for various projects, including a large, multi-year research initiative.
Position Summary
The Project Manager will coordinate the activities of various projects at the CCPA, including the Climate Justice Project (CJP), a multi-year research initiative exploring climate change policies through a social justice lens. The CJP is a joint project of the CCPA-BC and The University of British Columbia, in partnership with 40 community organizations and 25 academic collaborators. It is funded primarily by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada. The CJP encompasses research, communications/conferences and student training.
The position’s principal responsibilities are administrative and relate to: developing and maintaining project budgets and finances; establishing and monitoring project work plans and time-lines; organizing meetings and workshops; liaising with project investigators and community partners; coordinating peer reviews for research papers; writing funding and grant proposals; writing progress reports and reporting to funders; coordinating the placement and pay of student research assistants; and assisting the CJP directors, and other project committee members. Generally, this person will be responsible for the smooth operation of the CCPA’s CJP project and other CCPA projects.
Qualifications and Skills:
The successful candidate will be a highly organized and dedicated individual with strong logistical skills, and will have proven experience with project administration. Other skills and experience include:
- Education: University/college degree (or equivalent experience) in the social sciences, communications, community planning, accounting, business administration, or a related field;
- Experience in project administration (ideally managing research projects);
- Excellent financial management skills (including ability to manage budget spreadsheets, and to oversee daily financial transactions);
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills;
- Experience writing grant proposals and funding applications an asset;
- Strong computer skills (MS Office, internet/email applications);
- Outstanding attention to detail and inter-personal skills;
- While the main duties are administrative, the position requires an ability to conceptually understand and report on the research work of the project.
Experience working with a non-profit organization is desirable, and knowledge of BC public policies is an asset. The successful candidate should share a commitment to the CCPA’s Statement of Purpose. We are looking for an individual eager to help build a dynamic and successful research institute, and committed to ensuring the smooth coordination of its projects. The person hired for the position should feel comfortable working in a small office environment. The CCPA is a unionized workplace.

Duration:
Nine-month, part-time term position (4 days/week until the end of June
2011, then 2 days/week from July-September 2011)
Salary Range: $45,510 FTE (pro-rated), plus limited benefits
